You might find this genealogy kind of interesting.
My Aunt Clemma (my mother’s sister) married Hansford Gilkerson who’s sister, Ethel Gilkerson married B.H. Lucas and became his second wife (his first wife passed away).
So, Brother Lucas became my pastor and my uncle (by marriage).
My mother, Ivadene Crigger, and my father Harmon Crigger, were separated and we were living with my Aunt and Uncle in Garden City, Michigan.
We went to the Pilgrim Holiness Church which was pastored by both Bro. Lucas and Aunt Ethel (both were ordained ministers.
What followed were experiences that became the basis for my belief in God.
I was so sensitive to The Holy Spirit, and Bro. Lucas’ sermons were so convicting, I found myself at the altar many times.
For those who might not know what “conviction” is. Conviction is when the Lord is telling you that things are not right. You know that to be at peace, you have to get it right. The only way to get it right is to go to the altar and ask for forgiveness. |
I‘ve been asked for the date that I was “Saved”. My response is that I cannot remember when I was not. I believe that Salvation is a constant experience that begins when you go down to the altar “snottin’ and cryin” and ask God to forgive you. The constant is that we mess up. We sin! God cannot allow sin to enter Heaven. So! We must ask forgiveness every time we go against the laws of God. If we don’t ask forgiveness, that sin is still there. If that sin is still there, then you will go to hell. If that sin is still there, you ARE NOT saved.
I believe these scriptures from Hebrew will explain this. Hebrews 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
Another scripture in Hebrews tells it this way: Hebrews 10):26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins.
I believe that Salvation is on-going. If you mess up and don’t ask for forgiveness, you will find yourself farther and farther away from God. Perhaps to the point where you tell yourself “I’m saved” but according to God’s law: you’re not. |
