One of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence was an active clergyman. John Witherspoon was a Presbyterian minister and president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). Two other signers were former clergyman (Robert Treat Paine and Lyman Hall). John Witherspoon's most prominent students were Aaron Burr (Third Vice President of the United States) and James Madison (Fourth President of the United States). |
