Bud Atkinson was born and grew up near Stone Mountain Georgia and thus the nickname Georgia Songwriter. The first thirty years of his life he admits to being only a church member.
One day on his way home from work his “Hog” met a “dog”—(that is his Harley met a hound that was crossing the road). The bike was traveling at 46 mph when it went down and he says: “these thoughts were going through my mind while I was sliding on my hands and knees: I’m about to meet God—I’m not saved—I’m just a church member, and I’m going to Hell.”
God spared his life that day and it became a wakeup call because not many days later Bud met the Lord in a revival meeting. At this point in his life, he began studying the Bible, hungry for everything God had for him.
At age 50, Bud began “hearing” the words of a Gospel message. He wrote these thoughts down in a journal and soon there were dozens of messages and he considered that it might be a call to preach. Two years later he began also “hearing” the melody with the words.
His first song ever recorded was entitled “The Cost Of The Wedding” and was co-written by Brother Jerry Smith. It was recorded by Ray Amerson’s group called the Joint Heirs.
Bud has been married for over fifty one years and has three children. Through the years he has enjoyed gardening with home grown tomatoes high on his list of favorites. (He likes to grow those tomatoes that let the juice run down your arm when you bite into it)). He and his wife Sandra are members of Newton Baptist church in Covington Georgia where Brother Tony Howeth is Pastor.
Bud is 73 years old now and that “Still small voice” has given him over 6500 songs and almost all of them are about Jesus. He says most of the songs were written in about fifteen to thirty minutes and many of them recorded just as he wrote them, and were never edited. Bud has 193 recordings made by 132 different groups or soloist. Among them are the Gold City Quartet, Calvary Construction Company, Master’s Quartet and The Crist Family, The Reffiett Ministry, Churchmen, New Vision Trio, and many more.
Bud laughingly says his favorite group is anyone who happens to be singing one of his songs. Bud is only a servant of the Lord and wants the praise and glory to be given to the one who saved his soul. Now and then somebody will say to him: “you have a real gift,” or they may say “You have a real talent.” His favorite reply is: I don’t have a “Gift,’ I have a “guest,” (Jesus) and I don’t have a “Talent,” I have a “Tenant.” (The Holy Spirit)
He would also ask you to consider this: God’s still speaking—is anybody listening? |
