Something has happened over the past 20 years in gospel music. Were not really sure when it started or even why it started but after speaking with thousands of gospel music artist across this country the why's are clearly coming to the surface. Whenever we speak with new gospel artist we always ask them what are their goals. The responses are truly astounding. Over 80% of the responses are something like making a new album, getting a song on the radio, getting promotion or a booking agent and even the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow of taking a national stage somewhere and becoming a Gaither homecoming singer. Sadly its very rare we get the response of spreading the gospel through song to win the lost. So, when did it all change? Why did it all change? Here are some our thoughts. We believe it all goes back to about the same time the homecoming series came to the forefront. When you look back at the original series it was filled with the old groups and singers that were ministry minded and that use to come to churches on a regular basis. People remembered them and were longing to hear those types of groups and singers that they use to see in their own churches. When they came not only would they sing but they would testify, read the word and even get on their knees at the alters and pray with people. As these groups began to die off people flocks to the concerts and bought the video just wanting to remember. So though the entertainment factor tool over as the tried to fill the spots and as we like to say, feed the beast with new singers, new groups with that wow factor to keep up the video and ticket sales. So new young artist saw this pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and so did the hundreds of people with their hands out waiting to take advantage of the dreamers and promise to help them reach that national stage. More and more the influence of the industry crept in and the stars in artist eyes thought they would be able to reach that rainbow if only they would just do what everyone else is doing. So sadly we have become a world of wanna be's and have lost sight of the way things use to be. Even to the point that we actually have gospel "artist " out there promoting themselves at every event possible and every media possible but who haven't darkened a church door in years and have no desire to. The chance to call themselves gospel artist is all they care about. That is truly sad. So, can this trend be turned around? Were praying so. As we talk with pastors across this country they are seeking the same thing that those original homecoming followers were seeking, ministry! Those groups and singers who were like the groups of old. Real music with meaning and message and a heart to win the lost. So, ask yourself what are your goals? Take a hard look at what you are really seeking. Make a change to the ways of old and the Lord will open the doors for you. Leave the industry behind and seek his kingdom and remember, the National Quartet Convention will probably still be going on after the rapture. Lets pray you wont be singing there then..
